One Direction has social media to thank for a lot of their success here in the US. Their videos from them performing on the UK X Factor were uploaded to YouTube so they had millions of US fans before ever coming here. They have over 11 million likes on Facebook and 6-8 million Twitter followers. On Twitter they can tweet about appearances and concerts to get people to go and it also helps fans feel more connected to them. They often get a lot of trends on twitter like during their iCarly episode some of the trends were "#GibbyToOpenNext1DTour" and "Sam and Zayn". One Direction even set the record on YouTube for the most viewed single in 24 hours for their song Live While We're Young. The video got 8.34 million views and beat Justin Bieber who previously held the record with 8 million views for his single Boyfriend.

Ever since One Direction became popular in the US they have been wanted everywhere. They have appeared on Ellen, The Today Show, Saturday Night Live, and The Late Show with David Letterman to name a few. Back in April they were guest stars on the Nickelodeon show iCarly. The episode entitled iGo Go One Direction had around 3.9 million viewers. When One Direction was on The Today Show in November they performed three of their songs and also had the biggest crowd in Today Show history. Recently One Direction signed a multi-million dollar deal with Pepsi following in the footsteps of other stars such as Michael Jackson and Britney Spears. Their commercial also features football player Drew Brees. One Direction is also featured on Barbara Walters' Most Fascinating People of 2012. All this popularity just makes them more famous and helps their record and merchandise sales, the TV shows they are featured on, and they could help Pepsi sales.

One Direction Success in the US

1D

One Direction has been quite successful in the US since their two albums were released. Their first album, Up All Night, was released in March 2012 and was debuted at Number 1 on the US Billboard 200 charts. Their album had sold over five million copies in the US alone. Their single on that album, What Makes You Beautiful, sold three million units. Their second album, Take Me Home, was also on the US Billboard 200 charts. This is the first time that a British band has seen their first two albums debut at the top of the US Billboard chart. Their single of their second album, Live While We're Young, sold 341,000 copies in a week in the US. One Direction has also helped stop the decline of US album sales which dropped 0.6% in the first six months of 2012. This is really amazing for One Direction to do so well in the US because it is usually a tough market for new artists.

The five members of 1D have had their faces plastered on calendars, pillows, blankets, shirts, jewelry, school supplies, backpacks, toothbrushes/toothpaste, and iPhone cases. They also have their very own dolls and they even sing to you. The dolls are made by Hasbro and they have seen good sales from the dolls. And there are tons of shirts with expressions like "I love 1D" or "Future Mrs. Horan". Some stores that sale 1D merchandise are Delias, Claires, and Target. These stores get increased revenue from all the crazy fangirls willing to buy anything with "their future husband's" face on it. One Direction even has its very own stores in New York, Chicago, Canada, and Australia with over 125 items for sale. The boys have made 126 billion and a lot of it is due to merchandise as well as music sales and sold out concerts. One Direction has an advantage by selling so much merchandise. There was never Beatles toothpaste like what 1D has. One Direction will generate more money because they have their faces on so many products.

Technology Influences Music

One Direction's Albums

It used to be that you would go to the store and buy your favorite bands record which turned into a cassette which then turned into a CD and now most people just buy music off iTunes or illegally download it from the internet. One Direction has seen great music sales from iTunes. The bands second album, Take Me Home which was released in November, was the fastest-selling preorder in iTunes history. It reached the number one preorder in over 40 countries around the world. Having the technology to access music so quickly helps bands, but hurts album sales in stores. One reason why iTunes is so popular is because you don't have to purchase a whole album for around $15 when you can just purchase the songs you want for $1.29. Portable music devices such as MP3 players and iTunes also contribute to the decrease in CD sales. There is no reason to buy a CD when you can just download the songs right to your music device. Digital music sales have increased 80% in the last few years because of this. But this can affect musicians if people aren't buying their whole album and they just buy the singles that make all the top 40 lists. Then their album sales will decrease and could affect their success.

Album Comparisons

Source: I made the graph on Power Point

One Direction has made two albums in the last year and have already sold more that 12 million copies which is amazing for a new band with such young members. On the graph above you can see that the Backstreet Boys are in the lead for the most albums sold, but they have been around since the early 90's. They released two albums in the course of two years and sold around 28 million copies. One Direction's CDs have only been out for less than a year and they've sold 12 million, in another year they might be able to surpass the Backstreet Boys, who happen to be the best selling boy band of all time. So even though One Direction has sold the least amount of albums, they have also been famous for the least amount of time and in a few years could sell more albums than some of these boy bands. Album sales are influenced by the amount of albums a band has made, for instance the Backstreet Boys have made eight studio albums and N'Sync has only made three. Right now there is no talk of a new One Direction CD, but there would be no surprise if the boy band released a new album in 2013. Album sales not only help musicians, they help record labels, producers, and of course the stores that sell them.

Touring

Singing at a Concert

Every musical artist goes on tour to promote their albums and be able to feel the accomplishment of selling out an entire arena. Back in the 60's the Beatles went on tours to promote record sales. They would price the tickets really low so that they were guaranteed to be sold out and it was a way to reward fans for being loyal and buying their music. The term for this is consumer surplus fans would be willing to pay such a high price for tickets, but they keep them at a low cost. An average Beatles ticket for a concert in Chicago back in 1966 was $5.75 and in today's dollars that would be around $37.60, which is ten times less then what you would pay for any major act today. (One Directions are around $263) Touring in the 21st century is a lot different then it was back then. There are still millions of screaming fans, but technology has changed the way people participate in a concert. It used to be that concert goers would listen to the music and now they still do, but they have their cameras and phones to film and take pictures to document every moment. It is not the same experience it used to be. For instance One Direction filmed one of their concerts and made it in to a popular selling DVD and they have another 3D concert movie coming out in August 2013. Beatles concerts were filmed too, but it wasn't all about the money, back then it was more about the music.
